article-photo-1311
Are you planning to visit Madrid in 2 days? Over a weekend getaway?

Two days is enough time to soak up the atmosphere of Spain's capital and explore its iconic neighborhoods. With a perfect itinerary, some well-chosen activities, and a solid plan in hand, you can see tons during a weekend trip.

And if you're traveling solo as a woman – whether for a Spanish getaway or a longer European adventure – Madrid is a perfect destination: vibrant and reassuring for female travelers.

Day 1: Historic Neighborhoods of Madrid

All these routes are easily walkable.

Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor

Puerta del Sol is the beating heart of Madrid, day and night. In five minutes, you'll reach Plaza Mayor, the capital's iconic square with its arcades and lively terraces. Perfect for a Madrid-style break.

Calle Mayor and Historic Side Streets

Wander through the small streets around Calle Mayor, where every corner tells a piece of Madrid's history. And if it's aperitif time, stop by Casa Ciriaco: over a hundred years of tradition, a well-served vermouth, and a typically castiza atmosphere.

Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral

Next, head to see these two impressive monuments, Madrid's Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral, surrounded by magnificent gardens.

Royal Palace: Entry costs about €14. Plan 1 hour for a quick visit without a guide.

Almudena Cathedral: Access is free (donations welcome). Recommended visit duration between 30 and 45 minutes. To climb the dome or visit the museum, budget €7.

San Miguel Market

The Mercado de San Miguel, a true temple of Madrid cuisine, sits right in the heart of the city. In this chic and lively setting, you can sample tapas while sipping a glass of vermouth. Yes, it's touristy and not cheap... but it's an unmissable Madrid landmark to see at least once.

La Latina Neighborhood

The popular soul of Madrid: a lively neighborhood with colorful facades and flowered balconies, a bit chaotic. The cobbled streets lead to terraces full of life, where you settle wherever there's a chair available, to drink "una caña" (a cold beer) in summer.

Plaza de España and Flamenco Show

To finish the circuit beautifully, go up to admire the view from the rooftop of Riu Plaza España (access from €5), then take a detour to the iconic statue of Cervantes, surrounded by Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. A literary nod in the heart of the square.

And if you want to extend the evening, attend a flamenco show at tablao Las Tablas right next door.

Day 2: Culture, Relaxation and Local Atmosphere

The Golden Triangle of Art

Three superb museums, but it's better to choose just one to really enjoy it. I chose the Reina Sofía Museum to see Picasso's Guernica. Entry price: €12 to €15 and you need to allow at least 1.5 hours for the visit.

  • Prado Museum: classical works
  • Reina Sofía Museum: national museum of modern art
  • Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: focused on figurative painting

Santa Ana Neighborhood

Lunch break at Plaza Santa Ana – this neighborhood nicknamed the "literary heart" of the city is surrounded by historic cafés and bars. For a homemade tortilla that I highly recommend, try bar Lateral Santa Ana: relaxed atmosphere and pleasant terrace. Budget about €4 to €5 for a good portion.

Retiro Park

In the afternoon, head to Madrid's green lung, the perfect place away from the city's hustle and bustle. Take a stroll and pause at the light-filled Crystal Palace, or settle by the lake to watch the boats go by.

Puerta de Alcalá

Right next to the Retiro, this monumental granite gate with majestic arches marks one of Madrid's former entrances. It's one of the city's most photogenic symbols.

Círculo de Bellas Artes Rooftop

If you still have some energy, climb up to one of Madrid's most beautiful rooftops. The 360° view over the city's rooftops is stunning. Entry costs about €5 to €8, depending on the time and day – a small price for a postcard with Gran Vía right at your feet.

Temple of Debod

In the evening, this authentic Egyptian temple lights up at sunset. Perched on a hill, it offers a superb view over Madrid and Casa de Campo. A peaceful and free spot to end the day.

Gran Vía

If you still have some energy, end the day with a stroll down Gran Vía, Madrid's liveliest avenue.

Everything You Need to Know for Visiting Madrid in 2 Days

Where to Eat in Madrid During Your Stay?

Must-Try Tapas and Markets

While Mercado de San Miguel is worth the detour, for a more local atmosphere, head to San Ildefonso or Antón Martín markets. Perfect for tasting tapas and vermouth.

Craving Something Sweet?

Chocolatería San Ginés, founded in the late 19th century near Puerta del Sol, is famous for its churros con chocolate!

Where to Dine Like a Local Woman?

Madrid cuisine is all about flavor and generosity. Cozy atmosphere at Taberna La Concha (La Latina) or chic dining with a view at Azotea del Círculo.

Where to Stay for the Best Location?

For a stay in the heart of the action, choose a hotel or accommodation in central Madrid, around Sol, Gran Vía, or Plaza Mayor. It's practical for a walking itinerary.

If you prefer a calmer atmosphere, the La Latina neighborhood is ideal (I felt super comfortable there traveling solo as a woman).

And if you want to experience something more personal, consider the NomadSister platform: you stay with a verified female host, in a 100% feminine, warm, and secure environment.

Average Budget for a 2-Day Stay in Madrid

Madrid isn't necessarily the cheapest European destination for budget travel.

For a two-day city break, it's better to budget between €130 to €200 per day (€260-400 total) to be comfortable.

If you're traveling solo but taking care of your comfort (mid-range hotel, nice meals, a museum or two), aim for around €350.

How to Get Around Madrid

It's a human-sized capital, ideal for exploring on foot.

Madrid's metro system is incredibly well-designed. Fast, clean, and very easy to understand (even if you don't speak Spanish) and it even goes to the airport. I recommend getting a rechargeable transport card.

What's the Best Time to Visit Madrid?

The best time to discover Madrid is in spring or fall, when the weather is pleasant and temperatures are mild – perfect for enjoying the city without crowds or summer heat.
